A lot of people opt for whole-home generators for continued comfort, but there are other advantages to them as well.
These include improved safety by ensuring the continued use of security systems. They also can save you money by avoiding costly repairs, such as busted water pipes due to freezing temperatures.
When installing a home generator, it is important to buy a quality one. Generac home generators have made a name for themselves as some of the most reliable and long-lasting ones available today.
It also is vital that you know how to set up and operate your Generac generator. This will ensure optimum functionality and energy delivery.
Below is an operator's guide. Keep reading to find out how to get your Generac generator installed and up and running.
Before purchasing a new home generator, be sure you are getting the appropriate size for your electrical needs. Going too large is overkill but getting a generator that is too small means it could become overloaded.
Installation of a Generac generator is fairly straightforward. However, keep in mind that it does require running electrical, plumbing, and natural gas lines, as well as laying concrete slabs (in some cases).
If you are not handy with at least one of these processes, you may want to consider hiring professional installers to tackle the project. However, there, are some basic things you can do to get ready for the installation.
Depending on where you live, there may be community restrictions on installing generators. You may need to get necessary permits from homeowners associations or other such entities.
You also need to identify an area near the structures you plan to power that is flat, stable, and free of the potential to flood.
There also should be room for several feet between the generator and the building. The generator also should be at least five feet from any doors, windows, or air intakes.
Once you have selected a suitable spot, you should lay a base for the generator to sit on. This can be a basic cement slab or--the ground is hard enough--a simple pea gravel layer. The latter is more economical but less stable than concrete.
From here, it is time to connect the fuel and electrical lines. Note that generators require dedicated breaker panels, an inlet box, and a transfer switch. This final component senses when the main power is out and switches over to generator power.
Generac generators come with a push-button start. However, as mentioned, installation should have included a transfer switch, so that it starts up as soon as the main electrical power fails. If this does not happen, there may be an issue with the electrical configuration.
Like any other piece of equipment, your Generac generator needs some basic upkeep and maintenance. Fortunately, maintaining a whole home generator is quite simple, so there is no reason not to perform it.
After about every 200 hours of run time, you should change the oil in the generator, and replace the oil filter, air filter, and spark plugs. You can purchase dedicated kits that come with all these items, including the exact amount of oil you need.
First, open the top and remove the side panel. Then, switch the circuit breaker on the top of the general to the "OFF" position.
The oil compartment has a drain hose with an orange cap that you can remove. Drain the oil into a pan placed beside the generator.
Once the oil has drained, be sure to replace the cap on the hose and secure it to the side. At this point, you should replace the oil filter, which is located near where the hose protrudes.
On the top of the engine, open the air filter box and remove the old filter. Replace it with a new filter and secure the air filter
box lid.
Finally, detach the two cables attached to the spark plugs on the top front and back of the engine. Unscrew the spark plugs, replace them with new ones (if needed), and then replace the cables.
Before flipping the breaker back on, press the "OFF" button on the control panel. This should reset the maintenance schedule.
Turn the breaker back to the "ON" position and press "MANUAL" on the control panel. This should start the generator so you can ensure that it is running properly.
There are two final components that you will need to maintain or replace after years of use: the battery and gas regulators.
You should inspect these on a regular basis to ensure they are working properly.
Generac generators use a single, large battery, connected to a charger. From time to time, check to see the battery and charger unit to make sure that ample amperage is being produced. If the amperage is low, it could be that the charger is
not operating as intended.
Generac generators also rely on fuel regulators for proper installation. This ensures there is proper fuel pressure and volume for generator operations. If there is not a pressure gauge already installed on yours, you can purchase one that you can attach to the fuel line to test it.
Note that, if there are any issues with your fuel supply, you should turn off the source before working on the unit. Again, a
professional technician will be able to quickly identify potential leaks or other issues, so that you can get your standby generator running properly again.
Now that you know how to operate a new Generac generator, you can ensure you are getting the most out of it for your home or office. With some basic setup efforts and regular maintenance, you can expect your Generac to perform well for years.
